Tissue conditioners
Tissue conditioners Composition
The material is a three-component system
- Polymethyl-methacrylate (Polymer)
- Aromatic ester ethyl alcohol mixture of the monomer (liquid)
- A liquid plasticizer.
- These materials, when mixed, form a gel, the ethyl alcohol having a greater affinity for the polymer.
Tissue Conditioners Use Of Tissue Conditioners
- Used as adjuncts in conditioning the denture-bearing tissues to a healthy state.
- For temporary obturation.
- Protection of surgical areas.
- Used as a stabilizer of base plates or surgical stents.
- In impression-making procedures.
- Used as adjuncts in the healing phase of tissue-integrated implants.
Tissue Conditioners Adjuncts in Tissue Conditioning
Tissue conditioners are used to condition selected oral structures to bear
Tissue conditioners The stresses of denture prostheses, such as:
- In distorted tissues such as hypertrophic, irritated, hyperemic, and displaced oral mucosa associated with ill-fitting, poorly occluding dentures, bruxism, papillary hyperplasia, depressed areas associated with suction cups, and patients with avitaminosis or general debilitating disease.
- For the preservation of the residual ridge.
- To re-establish and maintain proper maxillomandibular jaw relationships.
Tissue conditioners Temporary Obturators
- Tissue conditioners may be added to an obturator on an existing complete or partial denture by direct or indirect method.
- Usually done seven to ten days after surgery.
- Tissue conditioners protect the tissues and enhance the healing process as in cases of resected maxillae.
- In obturator patients, it can aid in improving masticatory function, deglutition, and speech.
Tissue conditioners Stabilizers of Base Plates
- In an edentulous cast with undercuts, tissue conditioners can be used to stabilize recording bases and prevent breakage of the cast.
- Reduces the error in recording jaw relation records.
- Breakage and abrasion of the edentulous cast are prevented with a better finish for the final denture.
Tissue conditioners Adjunct in the Impression-making
- As a final impression material when it is difficult to determine the extent of the denture base due to movable oral structures.
- They will record the extension in a dynamic form which will help in making of an impression tray for the final impression.
Tissue conditioners Technique in the use of tissue conditioner
Tissue conditioners The dentures to be relined should have:
- Adequate coverage of the denture-bearing area
- A good centric relation
- Adequate occlusal vertical dimension
- No occlusal interferences in eccentric jaw positions.
Tissue conditioners Preparation Of The Denture
- The tissue surface of the denture is relieved of all undercuts and nearly 2 mm of denture material is relieved from all over the tissue surface sufficient to allow the displaced and traumatized tissue to recover to a normal state.
- Retain the borders or flanges and the hard palatal area as vertical stops in seating. If the denture base is short extend it by using activated acrylic resin to provide support for the soft material.
Tissue conditioners Preparation and placement of tissue conditioner in the mouth
- For conditioning tissues, a ratio of 1¼ parts of polymer to 1 part of monomer is used with the addition of 1 /2 cc of the plasticizer.
- Place the material on the denture base and seat without much pressure. Allow the material to set. A new application of the material is needed every three to four days until the tissues have recovered.
- Ideally, eight to ten weeks is sufficient to determine the potential benefits of the use of a resilient liner.
- After the denture base material has been removed and replaced with processed acrylic resin
- remount procedures are done as follows:
- Eliminate undercuts to make an accurate remount cast of dental plaster of both arches.
- Make a face bow transfer of the maxillary cast and mount the lower cast to the upper in centric relation and eliminate all occlusal discrepancies in centric and eccentric relation by selective grinding procedures.
