Strategy Of Behaviour Management Introduction
Behaviour management techniques help the paediatric dental team to obtain acceptable behaviour of the child. This is achieved by a combination of psychological and pharmacological modes of behaviour management. Effective dental care is delivered to the child when he exhibits desired behaviour in the dental operatory.
Table of Contents
The behaviour management strategy is notified as the behaviour of the child may not be uniform throughout the procedure. The level of stress or anxiety or fear may be very high in the beginning of the procedure. This may demand the application of certain management techniques to obtain the cooperation of the child. The child may cooperate as the procedure continues and the management technique has to be modified accordingly.

The management strategy of child behaviour can be learnt in a flowchart model. This is better called the outline of the mode of management of child behaviour.
Behaviour Of Children And Corresponding Management
This chapter is in the form of a table and different flowcharts. Seven types of children are listed in Table and the corresponding outline of mode of behaviour management is discussed in the flowcharts that follow the table.
Summary
- Behaviour management of children is a predictable science. It consists of three phases, namely communication (multisensory), behaviour shaping and behaviour retraining/reshaping.
- On the basis of the baseline behavioural presentation of the child, the order of choice, flow between the phases and emphasis over a particular phase vary.
- Management of the varying types of baseline behaviour presentation of children in the operatory is illustrated.
