Fabrication Of Removable Partial Denture Introduction
A complete denture is fabricated to replace all missing teeth and associated structures. A removable partial denture is fabricated to restore partially edentulous arches. The basic procedures and principles for the fabrication of a removable partial denture are similar to those of a complete denture. In this chapter, the fabrication of removable partial dentures is given in brief.

Fabrication Of Record Based On Maxillary And Mandibular Partially Edentulous Casts
Step 1:
Mark the height of the contour with a pencil. Draw the outline for a partial denture.

Step 2:
Mark outline for making record base. Apply cold mold seal on the edentulous area and interdental areas. Apply it on the lingual surface of the remaining teeth on the cast. Allow it to dry.
Step 3:
Make a record base with self-cure acrylic resin. Cover the remaining teeth on the cast till the
height of contour. Retrieve the record base slowly from the cast. Trim the excess acrylic resin from borders and smoothen the borders. Extend the mandibular record base till the retromolar pads bilaterally.
Fabrication Of Occlusion Rims
Step 1:
Soften the wax sheet on the Bunsen burner and fold it to make a roll of it. Take care not to entrap the air while making the wax roll.
Step 2:
Cut the wax roll according to the length of the edentulous span. Adapt the wax roll on the denture base in the edentulous area. Heat the wax knife and seal the wax on the record base.
The height is adjusted according to the remaining natural teeth on the cast using a hot plate. Anteriorly keep the width around 5–7 mm. Place it slightly labially. The posterior width is kept at 8–10 mm.
Mounting Of Casts On Articulator
Step 1:
Place the maxillary and mandibular casts together. The remaining teeth on each cast should be in occlusion with teeth on the opposite cast. Do indexing on the base of the casts before mounting.
Step 2:
Articulate the casts on the mean value articulator following the steps used for mounting the complete denture casts.
Teeth Arrangement And Wax-Up Procedure
Select the proper size of artificial teeth. Arrange the teeth on the occlusion rim according to the steps followed for the arrangement of artificial teeth for a complete denture. Make sure that artificial
teeth are arranged with proper overjet and overbite along with proper occlusal contacts. Do the wax-up according to the steps followed for a complete denture wax-up procedure.
Processing Of Removable Partial Denture
The flashing is done according to the standard procedure used for a complete denture.
Select appropriate flasks. Pour a creamy mixture of investing plaster on the base of the flask and place the cast in the center. Keep the occlusal plane parallel to the base of the flask. Make sure that there is no undercut in the first pour. Make it sloping toward the rim of the flask. Heal of the mandibular cast should be at 45°.
Note: Cover the remaining natural teeth on the cast with the plaster of the first pour. This is done to eliminate undercuts created due to the inclination of teeth.
Apply to separate medium in a unidirectional manner. Pour the second pour till the incisal edges and occlusal surfaces. Mix dental plaster and pour the third pour. Place the flasks on clamps and tighten them completely. Wax elimination is done by following the steps for a complete denture wax elimination procedure.
Pack acrylic resin in the dough stage and proceed with the sacralization procedure. Remove the flask after acrylization and open it to retrieve the cured partial denture. Carefully retrieve the removable partial dentures from the flasks. Trim excess material from borders and peripheries.
Finishing of removable partial dentures is done using sandpaper and emery paper. Polishing (pumicing) is done using pumice powder or pumice cake. Use a rag wheel to polish the palatal surface of the maxillary partial and the lingual surface of the mandibular partial denture. Use clean cotton buff or rag wheel without pumice to give final polishing and shine. This will remove any pumice present on the surface.
Clean the partial denture with soap and water to remove any residual polishing agent from the polished surface.
