Introduction To Maxillofacial Prosthesis
Maxillofacial Prosthetics/Prosthodontics
The branch of prosthodontics concerned with the restoration and/or replacement of the stomatognathic and craniofacial structures with prostheses that may or may not be removed on a regular or elective basis. This branch of prosthodontics deals with replacement and rehabilitation of missing structures of face and stomatognathic system.
Table of Contents
The intraoral maxillofacial prosthesis are obturator, mandibular resection prosthesis, and nasoalveolar molding prosthesis and extraoral maxillofacial prosthesis are nasal prosthesis, auricular prosthesis, cranial prosthesis, orbital prosthesis, and facial prosthesis.

Classification Of Maxillofacial Prosthesis
The classification of maxillofacial prosthesis is given in Flowchart.
Objectives Of Maxillofacial Prosthesis
- Restoration of defects to improve esthetic or cosmetic appearance
- Restoration of function
- Protection of tissue
- Therapeutic or healing effect
- Psychologic therapy.
Materials Used For Fabrication Of Maxillofacial Prosthesis
- Acrylic resin
- Vinyl plastisols (realistic, mediplast)
- Acrylic copolymers—Palamed
- Chlorinated polyethylene
- Latex
- Heat vulcanizing silicone
- Room temperature silicone (Silastic)
- Polyphosthazines.
Types Of Maxillofacial Prosthesis
Obturator:
Obturator prosthesis is used to prevent the communication between the nasal cavity and oral cavity. This communication is may be due to congenital or acquired.
Gunning Splint:
Gunning splint is stabilizing device used for reduction and stabilization in case of jaw fracture in edentulous patient. Special features are added to fix the upper and lower part of gunning splint to stabilize fractured jaw bone.
Nasal Prosthesis:
Nasal prosthesis is artificial nose made up of silicone material with internal stains/pigments added to material to match patient’s skin color It improves the facial esthetic of the patient.
Ear Prosthesis:
Ear prosthesis can be made up of silicone material with added internal and external pigments to match with facial skin color. It is position in place by using adhesive or by using hair band.
Orbital Prosthesis:
Orbital prosthesis replaces eye and part of the orbit. The sclera and iris should match exactly with patient eye to impersonate the natural color of eye.
Finger Prosthesis:
Replaces lost fingers either congenitally or due to some accidents. Nasoalveolar Molding Prosthesis/Platen. The nasoalveolar molding prosthesis/plate is described.
