Record Base Introduction

The record base can be fabricated with various materials and methods. Wax occlusal rims are fabricated on records bases and jaw relation is recorded which is transferred on articulators. Artificial teeth are arranged on these records bases and a trial is done. Record bases should be fabricated accurately to judge denture retention, stability, and esthetic.

Record Base Definition

A material or device represents the base of a denture. It is used for making maxillomandibular relation records and arranging teeth.

Record Base Classification

Based on Material:

The record base can be classified based on the material used to fabricate it as given in Flowchart.

Based on Use:

The record base can be classified according to use as given in Flowchart.

Note: Permanent record bases are not discarded after dewaxing but they become part of the finished complete denture.

Record Base classification of record base according to use

A denture base can be temporary or permanent. The temporary record base is made up of shellac, self-cured acrylic resin, vacuum-formed vinyl and polystyrene, and base plate wax.

This will be removed after the dewaxing procedure and replaced by heat-cured acrylic resin to be a part of the processed denture. All metallic denture bases and processed heat cure denture bases are permanent denture bases. These will not be replaced after dewaxing but dentures will be made and cured on these only.

Denture Bases Diagnostic Uses

  • It can give an idea about overextension or underextension of the border of the first impression. The operator can get an idea about the correctness of the primary impression/primary cast as the record base is made on the primary cast.
  • Patients and dentists both can get ideas about acceptance and response to final dentures. If the patient has an exaggerated gag reflex, the dentist can know it with record base extension only and guide the patient to manage with denture base and final denture.
  • If the patient is suffering from xerostomia, the final retention can be predicted and preventive measures can be taken before final denture insertion.
  • The record base helps in establishing jaw relation records.
  • It helps in recording centric relationships.
  • Allow setting of artificial teeth on it for wax trial.

Denture Bases Ideal Requirements

  • It should be well adapted and accurately formed on the final cast.
  • It should be rigid and dimensionally steady.
  • It should be stable on the cast and on the denture foundation in the oral cavity.
  • It should be free of voids on the surface that contact the oral mucosa.
  • It should have smooth and rounded borders.
  • It should be easily removable from the cast.
  • It must reproduce accurately the landmarks of the final cast.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Denture Bases

The advantages and disadvantages of denture bases are listed in Table.
