Repair Of Fractured Denture Introduction
Complete denture fracture is a frequently encountered problem. The fracture results due to a sudden drop of denture by the patient during removal or washing. Fractured denture is repaired using autopolymerizing acrylic resin.

Repair of fracture dentures involves mainly two steps:
- Preparation of working cast.
- Repair of fracture denture.
Preparation Of Working Cast
Fracture maxillary and mandibular dentures at midline.

Step 1:
Assemble the fracture segments of the denture at the fracture line and add a drop of cyanoacrylate to temporarily hold them together.
Step 2:
Use wooden toothpicks or matchsticks to stabilize fragments of fractured dentures. Place toothpicks on the occlusal surface and seal them with sticky wax.
Step 3:
If any undercut is present block it with modeling wax and apply petroleum jelly all over the tissue surface.
Step 4:
Mix dental plaster in a creamy consistency and pour it on the tissue surface till the height of the borders. Pour the remaining plaster on the tile and invert the denture on it to form the working cast. Do not cover borders on polished surfaces. Make adequate thickness of the base of the working cast. Allow the plaster to set completely. Once it is set, remove the denture from the cast for repair.
Repair Of Fracture Denture
Step 1:
Remove toothpicks or matchsticks. Separate the fracture components. Trim the fracture edges by 2 mm and form the bevel for proper adaptation of acrylic resin. This is done to create space to fill the repair resin and join the fracture components.
Make grooves on the lingual surface of the mandibular denture. The grooves should cross the fracture line. Place the wrought wire in the grooves. The wire is used to reinforce the broken denture. For maxillary dentures, make dumbbell-shaped grooves along the fracture line.
Step 2:
Apply cold mold seal on the working cast in the region of fracture. Use unidirectional strokes. Allow it to dry completely. Place the components of the denture on the working cast. Mix polymer and monomer in a porcelain jar in proportion of 3:1 by volume. Pour the mixed resin into the fluid state in the fracture site from both the labial and lingual sides. Allow it to polymerize completely.
Remove the denture from the working cast. Trim the excess resin from the labial and lingual sides using an acrylic trimmer and finish with sandpaper or emery paper. Polish it using pumice and rag wheel.
